The recommendation for improvements to I-95, from Exit 19 to Exit 30, follows the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Planning and Environment Linkages (PEL) process—a collaborative and integrated approach to transportation planning that considers environmental, community, and economic goals early in the planning and design process. CTDOT is conducting the PEL Study to research ways to improve mobility on I-95 between Fairfield and Bridgeport.
Project Overview:
The purpose of this project, identified as State Project No. 50-222, is to identify projects that improve safety, mobility, and operations along the I-95 corridor between Bridgeport and Fairfield. The outcomes of the planning and environmental linkages study will streamline CTDOT’s project development and environmental review of resulting transportation improvement projects, accelerating project delivery and minimizing overall costs. Traffic on Post Road and Kings Highway (US Route 1) in Fairfield and State Street (Route 130), Fairfield Avenue (State Road 700) and Route 8 in Bridgeport also add to the congestion within the corridor. In addition to car and truck traffic, rail (Metro North Railroad and Amtrak), buses, bicyclists, and pedestrians travel within the corridor every day.
The public meeting will present data collected for the existing conditions, including traffic volumes, roadway conditions, and existing deficiencies. It will provide an opportunity for residents, property owners, community leaders and advocates, business owners, and employees to inform the Study team about their experiences in and around the I-95 study area.
The in-person public meetings will be an open house format, allowing community members to attend at any time after 6 p.m. (Fairfield meeting Feb. 18th) or 6:30 p.m. (Bridgeport meeting Feb. 20th). Informational slide decks and boards will be placed around the room for attendees to review at their leisure. Study team members will be present to discuss the existing conditions and the next steps for the study. The team is eager to learn about local travel experiences to help inform decisions as they develop a purpose and need for the study.
